Tom Hanks: as nice as you expected

It’s not surprising to see a signing or event for a local author, artist or musician at an indie bookstore. But when the local event features a world-famous celebrity and Oscar-winning actor--that’s a different story.

Village Books in Pacific Palisades, CA recently hosted a signing with Tom Hanks, a local guy and loyal customer. He offered his support by signing anything Hanks-related customers could buy at the store: DVDs of his films, and copies of John Adams and The Polar Express, among others.

People who attended loved having an opportunity to meet Hanks, get a unique gift, and support Village Books at the same time. And Hanks further cemented his reputation as an all-around good guy.

Of course his role as a chain bookstore mogul in You’ve Got Mail is funny in light of his support for indies, but you may also remember the independent appliance shop, Patterson’s, facing big-box competition in That Thing You Do!, which Hanks wrote and directed. Oh, you don’t remember that part? Go rent it from your local indie video store!

I've seen That Thing You Do

I've seen That Thing You Do half a dozen times, and I don't remember that bit at all.

Guess you've just given me a reason to schedule some more Tom Hanks time this weekend.

Tom Everett Scott's dad

Tom Everett Scott's dad would get really irate about Tele-Mart (a store that sold everything) taking business from their store. I love that movie.

We should have IndieBound Movie Days, and watch movies with independent business themes. I suggest Be Kind Rewind.

Freezing Cold

It was great to see that despite the cold (for us Angelenos anything below 68 degrees means hibernation) and the pouring rain, people flocked to Village Books, bought items and talked with Tom.
