About the Author
Ashanti was born on October 13, 1980 in Glen Cove, Long Island, where she still lives. She first sang in a gospel choir at age six. Her music career really took off in 1994 when her performance at a local talent show caught the eyes of industry insiders. It wasn't long before she signed with a management team and began getting increasingly higher-profile gigs, eventually landing the opportunity to work with famed record producer and Murder Inc. president Irv Gotti. In addition to her singing talent, Ashanti also trained as a dancer and danced most notably in Disney's Polly, which starred Phylicia Rashad. As an actress, she made a name for herself with roles in Spike Lee's Malcolm X and Who's Da Man. Ashanti's debut R&B album, Ashanti, went straight to #1 and spawned two top-ten singles [updated details tk]. Her next album is due out in February 2003 from Murder Inc. Records.
