Mr. Pottle, who oversees the town dump, cannot bear to destroy books, so he recycles them for the community to enjoy. However, the community soon discovers the book-loving dump man cannot read. About the Author
Born in New York City in 1926, Donn Fendler joined the Navy in World War II. After college he returned to serve his country as an officer in the U.S. Army, retiring after thirty years with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He now splits his time between Clarksville, Tennessee, and Newport, Maine. He has given countless talks at schools, libraries, and to scout troops about his tale of survival.

Mary Beth Owens is the author/illustrator of several picture books for children, among them the Tilbury House title Remember Me: Tomah Joseph's Gift to Franklin Roosevelt. Her books also include Panda Whispers and Counting Cranes. She has a passion for studying and illustrating nature. She lives in Maine.
