There Is a River completes the Southern trilogy begun by Charlotte Miller with the publication in 2000 of Behold, This Dreamer, followed in 2001 by Through a Glass, Darkly. [See opposite page.] Twenty years in the writing, the books paint a multi-generational saga of a Deep South that is now mostly gone but is the shared heritage of a majority of the regions natives -- share-cropping, subsistence farming, and working as wage hands in cotton mills. The sweep of Miller's vision is almost unrivaled in contemporary Southern literature. She writes with loving fondness about the Southern landscape, but with searing class consciousness about the struggle millions fought for economic survival for their families. There Is a River follows the Sanders family through World War II up to the early eighties, as they struggle through, and triumph over, hardship and personal vendettas. It brings to a satisfying close the bitter enmity between Miller's hero, Janson Sanders, and his nemesis, Buddy Eason.
