Award-winning authors Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan tell the story behind the scenes of the collaboration that created APPALACHIAN SPRING, from its inception through the score’s composition to Martha’s intense rehearsal process. The authors’ collaborator is two-time Sibert Honor winner Brian Floca, whose vivid watercolors bring both the process and the performance to life.

About the Author
Jan Greenberg is one of America's most prominent writers about art and artists for young readers. Jan Greenberg lives in St. Louis. Her art-related books co-written with Sandra Jordan include "Action Jackson" (a Sibert Honor Book), as well as books on Van Gogh, Frank O. Gehry, Andy Warhol, and Chuck Close.

Sandra Jordan is an educator engaged in the creation and management of Montessori schools for children, and is currently executive director of the Beverly Hills Academy in Beverly Hills, Michigan. In her role, she has emphasized and perfected her need to communicate accurately and passionately to parents yet maintain the simplicity needed to talk directly and effectively with children. In the medical field, the enemy of sharing information with patients lies in the complexity and volume of medical information available from ever-growing sources. Every page of information shared in this book was first shared with Ms. Jordan. Her insight, common sense, and desire for simplicity in the explanations and vocabulary we selected played a vital role. Ms. Jordan's goal is to convey information that is appropriate, understandable, and meaningful.

Brian Floca is the author and illustrator of "Locomotive", winner of the 2013 Caldecott Medal; "Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11", a Robert F. Sibert Honor Book and a New York Times Best Illustrated Book; "Lightship", also a Sibert Honor Book; and "Racecar Alphabet", an ALA Notable Children's Book. He has illustrated Avi's Poppy Stories, Kate Messner's Marty McGuire novels, and Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan's "Ballet for Martha: Making Appalachian Spring", a Sibert Honor Book and winner of the Orbis Pictus Award.
