Chandra Byers is a homeschooling mother of six, and David Byers has a Ph.D. in education and teaches education at the college level. Their oldest is now attending college on a scholarship, after having been homeschooled all her life. With their combination of experience and expertise, they show us how parents can continue to homeschool their children through high school in subjects for which they are not experts. Not only that, but they demonstrate how these home-taught children are fully prepared for college and are often superior performers. Not only has Dr. Byers helped prepare his own homeschooled children for college, but he has seen first-hand how many homeschooled students have done in college. They are both from Nebraska.
About the AuthorDr. David Byers holds degrees in Adult and Continuing Education, and Education with a specialization in Teaching and Learning. He and his wife, Chandra, have worked as Family Teachers at the Boys Down facility in Omaha, Nebraska, and have hometaught children ages 2 to 18 for over 12 years.
As a young girl, Chandra Byers traveled around the country with her family before settling down in the Denver area and entering college. It was there she met her future husband, David. Chandra later decided to attend a business school where she graduated top in her class as an administrative assistant. As a result of her training and experience in this field, she was able to take on a variety of part-time jobs over the years to help meet the family's needs.
Chandra reluctantly became a homeschooler when she and her husband decided to teach their oldest daughter at home during her kindergarten year. Now, over twelve years later, she is a mother of six children and plans to teach all of them at home all the way through their high school years.
Chandra is an active volunteer and leader for a variety of church and homeschooling committees. In addition, she sings with a group of friends at church on Sundays. In her limited spare time, she loves to read, paint, draw, and play the piano. Between teaching the children, managing the household, and working on a variety of house projects, a few minutes of time to work on these hobbies is hard to come by. She also loves to sew, quilt, and crochet. She is a skilled seamstress who has made numerous quilts and many outfits for the children over the years. Chandra had her own sewing business at one point, giving it up to care for her children.
