About the Author
William Jay Smith served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (a position now called Poet Laureate) from 1968 to 1970 and was twice a finalist for the National Book Award. He divides his time between Cummington, Massachusetts, and Paris.

SUZANNE MARRS is the author of Eudora Welty: A Biography andOne Writer's Imagination: The Fiction of Eudora Welty; the editor of WhatThere Is to Say We Have Said: The Correspondence of Eudora Welty and William Maxwell; and a recipient of the Phoenix Award for Distinguished Welty Scholarship. She is a professor of English at Millsaps College.
