The Irish Crown Jewels-the regalia or insignia of the Order of St Patrick-mysteriously disappeared from Dublin Castle in July 1907 and have never been found. A commission-charged to determine whether Sir Arthur Vicars, the Ulster King of Arms, had 'exercised due vigilance and proper care' as the custodian of the star and badge-heard various witnesses, including the three honorary office holders, Pierce Mahony, Vicars' nephew, Francis Shackleton, brother of the explorer Ernest Shackleton, and Francis Goldney, mayor of Canterbury. Vicars himself declined to assist the commission.
