I'm pretty sure COAS is independent. They certainly have the look and feel of an independent. I've never seen a chain store keep their customer credit/exchange information on 3x5 cards.

A huge stock of used books
I've only been to this store on one occasions, but it was a wonderful occasions. I enjoyed all the windy aisles packed to the ceiling with used and rare books. They had a coffee shop inside and they seemed one of the few interesting stores in the downtown out door mall. I hope they survive.
