Biased
I was the book buyer for the Freedom Center in the beginning and started the book collection from scratch. At the core of the Freedom Center book collection (not so much for the Freedom Center itself) are the ideas of courage, cooperation, perseverance and freedom. When building the collection, I held those four ideas close to my heart and researched the books for almost a year. I also used the stories and history of the Underground Railroad to springboard to other ideas of courage and cooperation. These movements included: WWII & the Holocaust, Native American issues, Japanese internment, antebellum & modern-day enslavement, sweat shops, sex trafficking and Gay/Lesbian issues. Unfortunately, after I decided that I could no longer be apart of the Freedom Center "family", my book collection was reassembled and the Gay/Lesbian section was removed. This was a sad event because I was the one who lobbied to have The Gay/Lesbian Rights movement included in the exhibits (a small 30 sec mention in one of the The Struggle Continues film) and thought it was important to have representation inside the book collection as well. Many people complained about the inclusion of GLBTQ issues, but I stood by my books and was very proud of all the collection I built. Also, one of the Board Members had one of my books removed from the shelf because it criticized Bush (the book was called The W Effect: Bush's War on Women). If you do visit the Freedom Center, please stop by and browse through the book collection (or what is left of it).
