"Pages closes but its spirit lives on through
This is not a Reading Series

By Marc Glassman

Pages is closing its doors on Queen Street West tonight. It’s been an amazing ride for all of us who have worked at the shop over the past 30 years. We’ve been fortunate to have amazing customers—cultured, sophisticated and loyal—who have inspired us with their knowledge and willingness to allow us to ‘hand-sell’ books to them.

As the store’s book buyer for all of that time, I had the great fortune to explore subjects and authors that must have seemed esoteric to the general population. But with a brilliant staff and an extraordinary book buying public, I could never go wrong.

Over the years, Pages’ bookshelves have groaned under the weight of volumes on cultural theory, contemporary art, film, design, radical politics, ecology, urban planning, feminism, poetry, belles lettres, Western and Eastern religion and philosophy, graphic novels and, of course, small press literature.

Being on Queen West since 1979, we’ve been a happy participant in the growth of a cultural community that has now spread itself across Toronto. Pages has featured many artists in its windows and sold tickets for countless cultural and political events. We’ve been fortunate to be a hub in a vibrant and active area in downtown Toronto—and we’ve taken our responsibility to the neighbourhood and the city quite seriously.

Though Pages will be gone from Queen West, our event programme This is not a Reading Series will continue at the Gladstone Hotel and other venues. Please continue to check this website and our new one at www.TINARS.ca for future events.

As proprietor of Pages, I want to thank all of you for supporting this store over the years. The last 30 years have been extraordinary ones for me. Thanks for making that possible."
