50 in 2009

50 in 2009

I tend to read voraciously, but I've never set an actual goal for myself, and never really thought to do so. Then I became a flight attendant, which was short-lived because it is nowhere near as glamorous as it sounds; I spent a of time sitting in the bowels of JFK waiting for flight assignments. As much as this sucked, it certainly gave me a lot of time for focused reading. A flight attendant I roomed with mentioned that she had set a fifty-book goal for the year for herself, and knowing my tendency to blaze through several titles at a time and then ignore books altogether for what could possibly amount to months I decided I would attempt to accomplish the same. These are the fifty I got through, ranked in order from favorite to least favorite. While some might question the amount of graphic fiction in helping me to reach this goal, I say to you: some of the print in that shit is TINY.

"Innovative & charming examination of those weird coincidences that seem to focus the whole world around us down to a tiny dot."
Published by: Oni Press
Edition: Paperback (ISBN #9781932664362)

"Wonderful anthology, especially for its grand variety spanning decades. formats, and concepts."
Published by: Yale University Press
Edition: Hardcover (ISBN #9780300126716)

"More gorgeous prose from an author whose work always amazes me. Also an interesting study in gender roles."
Published by: Vintage Books USA
Edition: Paperback (ISBN #9780679744474)

"Incredible, unlike any graphic novel I've read. It's enigmatic, poignant, and mysterious, all qualities Nilsen seems to achieve effortlessly."
Published by: Drawn and Quarterly
Edition: Hardcover (ISBN #9781897299081)

"Some questionable stereotypes, but generally a fun read. Robbins' religious philosophy comes down only slightly heavy-handed, and mainly because he's likely preaching to a choir (or was with me)."
Published by: Bantam
Edition: Paperback (ISBN #9780553377880)

"Adorable, just wish there was more to this."
Published by: Fantagraphics Books
Edition: Hardcover (ISBN #9781560979548)

"Surprisingly inspiring. Simple in style, but well worth reading, especially for aspiring writers."
Published by: Bantam
Edition: Paperback (ISBN #9780553373158)

"I loved everything about this book until I got to the last section, which ended it on an odd, unresolved note and kind of ruined it for me."
Published by: Harper Perennial
Edition: Paperback (ISBN #9780060882365)

"Goofy yet thought-provoking, more off-the-cuff than Dogs and Water but retains a lot of that same feeling."
Published by: Fantagraphics Books
Edition: Paperback (ISBN #9781560979807)

"Beautiful collection, at times very harrowing to read but well worth it."
Published by: Little, Brown and Company
Edition: Hardcover (ISBN #9780316113786)
