Real Name: Lawrence Schimel
Website: A Midsummer Night's Press
About Me:
I am a full-time author and anthologist, who has published over 90 books in a wide range of genres, including children's books, poetry, comics, queer theory, even a cookbook.
I write in both Spanish and English, and I translate from Spanish into English. I live in Madrid, Spain.
My first book of poems written in Spanish, DESAYUNO EN LA CAMA, has just been published in November 2008 from Desatada/Egales. I have published an English-language chapbook, FAIRY TALES FOR WRITERS, which will also be appearing in an illustrated, bilingual edition in France in 2009 from Editions Le Calepin Jaune.
I have published three collections of short stories: THE DRAG QUEEN OF ELFLAND (Circlet), HIS TONGUE (North Atlantic), and TWO BOYS IN LOVE (Seventh Window), and the graphic novel VACATION IN IBIZA (NBM).
Most of my children's books are written in Spanish, such as LA AVENTURA DE CECILIA Y EL DRAGÓN (Bibliópolis), COSAS QUE PUEDO HACER YO SOLO (Macmillan), or MARÍA Y EL MUSEO (Ediciones La Librería). My picture book NO HAY NADA COMO EL ORIGINAL (Destino) was chosen by the International Youth Library in Munich, Germany for the White Ravens 2005 and ¿LEES UN LIBRO CONMIGO? (Panamericana) was chosen by IBBY for Outstanding Books for Young People With Disabilities 2007.
I have two bilingual picture books: PIZZA PARTY/FIESTA CON PIZZA (Panamericana) and EL HUEVO DE CRISTAL/THE CRYSTAL EGG (Topka).
In English, one can find LITTLE PIRATE GOES TO BED and LITTLE PIRATE GOES TO SCHOOL, or the recent IS THAT A BAT? and IS A SHARK A FISH? all from Innovative Kids.
In addition to my own writing, I have edited many anthologies in many genres: fiction, poetry, essays, etc. I have twice won the Lambda Literary Award, for FIRST PERSON QUEER (Arsenal Pulp Press) and PoMoSEXUALS: CHALLENGING ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT GENDER AND SEXUALITY (Cleis). Some of my other anthologies include FOUND TRIBE: JEWISH COMING OUT STORIES (Sherman Asher), TWO HEARTS DESIRE: GAY COUPLES ON THEIR LOVE (St. Martin's Press), THINGS INVISIBLE TO SEE: LESBIAN AND GAY TALES OF MAGIC REALISM (Circlet), TAROT FANTASTIC (DAW Books), and STREETS OF BLOOD: VAMPIRE STORIES FROM NEW YORK CITY (Cumberland House).
I am the publisher of a small poetry press, A Midsummer Night's Press, which has published books such as THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED IN OUR OTHER LIFE by Achy Obejas, THE GOOD-NEIGHBOR POLICY: A DOUBLE-CROSS IN DOUBLE DACTYLS by Edgar Award-winner Charles Ardai, and BANALITIES by Brane Mozetic, translated from the Slovene by Elizabeta Zargi and Timothy Liu. We also publish the annual BEST GAY POETRY and BEST LESBIAN POETRY series. We are distributed in the US by SPD (www.spdbooks.org). Our website is: www.amidsummernightspress.com
