About Me:
I'm the primary developer for IndieBound.org. If there's something you'd like to see, let me know.
From 2003-2005 (and sporadically over the next few Christmas breaks) I worked as a bookseller at The Alabama Booksmith.
Just prior to joining ABA, I finished an MFA in Fiction Writing at the University of Virginia (May 2008). I have a degree I've been meaning to frame, but UVa uses crazy oversized Thomas Jefferson™ parchment so it doesn't fit in a normal frame and I've been too lazy to take it to a frame shop and so it sits, rolled up, in its mailing tube on my desk while the world goes on around it.

Friends of matt
Well, in the early entries...
Some of the early entries ramble on a bit much about Drupal, but I've been too busy lately to ramble! That said, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me--Drupal and I have been through a lot together, and I'm happy to help.
Here's the only one that really delivers on that promise:

Thanks
Matt, I recently found this site and I absolutely love the concept and functionality of everything. This is a very interactive community which is so refreshing. So a big thank you for all the work you have put into this great site. I will also let my in-laws know about this site as well as they too operate their own store.
Thank you!
Thank you for your friendship Matt!
Sincerely,

It Is I. . .Again
Matt,
I was playing around with some of the buttons to see where they would take me. I clicked on "Buy Online" next to one of the books on my wish list, and while it led me to the first independent bookstore on my list, the link didn't actually bring me to the book. I'm not sure how that function is supposed to work, but I thought I would ask. It is a great feature.
Thanks,
Brooks

Thank you!
There was an issue with how R.J. Julia's E-Commerce links were being handled. I've fixed it, so it's working now. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
cheers,
Matt
Thanks!
Thanks, Matt, for the information. Good to know. Here's another thought I had. What about a place for posting job openings at indpendents? You know, keeping it in the family, so to speak. . .

Classifieds
Thank you, these are great suggestions!
Historically, ABA's venue for this has been in Bookselling This Week's classifieds:
http://news.bookweb.org/classifieds/
ABA member bookstores may place up to four free ads per year:
http://www.bookweb.org/about/ads/booksellers.html
However, with IndieBound.org expanding to encompass other independent retailers, it would be a nice feature to have something here, too. I'll keep it in mind...thanks!
Happy holidays!
Matt
Site User Book Reviews?
This may already be covered somewhere, but I am relatively new to the site. Is there an opportunity on Indie for site users to review books? Maybe even just the new ones that have been selected as "Indie Nexts" or something?
Not yet, but there will be!
Hi Brooks--
Good question! The Wish Lists are currently the only interaction between users and books, but we are planning to add much more in the near future. 2009 should be a big year for IndieBound!
If you'd like to be notified of updates to the site, just make sure that "Receive IndieBound.org Updates & News" in your Account Settings is on. We send out updates whenever we have new features to announce.
(admin) change
I like this much more than the admin folks showing 0 points. :)
Has anyone told you today...
...That this place is made of awesome?
What a wicked-good site!
Thanks so much!
Thanks so much for the kind words. You've been here since the beginning...I'm glad the site's been able to keep you coming back.
Your book looks awesome, too...thanks for keeping pirates alive!
It's also awesome that you're linking to independent bookstores first...here's a link that will take visitors to buy your book online from an independent store, if you'd rather use this:
city not found
I am new to this gizmo but am having a difficult time. First I couldn't register because my city El Paso is not available. When I lied to the gizmo and said Dallas it accepted my registration. Now I want to add a great bookstore. El Paso of course. Won't let me. help!
Adding a City
Hi there--
Just because we don't have El Paso in our system yet doesn't mean you can't add it! You don't have to worry about whether the city field finds a match or not. Just enter El Paso, and it will be added automatically.
If you'd like to edit your profile, as well, just go to your profile page and click the "Interests, Location, & More" tab at the top. Then you can change your city to your real hometown!
Where's the feedback button?
Sorry to leave this here, but I can't find the feedback button now that the site's been changed!
Another user replied to a note I left on her profile...

I didn't get a notification that she replied. This is the problem I was having before. Help?

Feedback button blues
Hi Christina-Marie--
The Feedback button has moved to the footer of the page, where it says "Contact Us." Anything filed under "IndieBound.org Community" goes to me.
I have tried debugging this notes thing several times and can't figure out what's wrong yet. If I leave a note on someone else's profile, and they reply, I *do* get an email, so I haven't been able to reproduce the problem. Yea, verily, I have heard tell of this problem from other users, so I don't doubt that it *is* a problem, but I haven't been able to recreate it yet.
Anyway, I've been pretty swamped for the past week--as you could probably guess--but I will take a look at this again soon.
cheers,
Matt
Thanks...
Thanks for looking into it... I didn't get an email telling me that you replied to my note, by the way...
Drink plenty of fluids, get enough rest... I'm sure that bug will heal!

Hey...
Know what would be cool? A guestbook-type app that would plot out the signers' locations on a map! Slide.com has one, and I tried to stick it on my IndieBound profile, but I think the tags involved aren't allowed... Am I right?
Thanks!

Thanks...
... for looking into the "not getting notified about replies to user notes" thing! IndieBound's user community is going great - I get really excited every time I see new users signing up!
Best,

Did I say ...
... how much fun this new indie-thingy that you've created is?
Gotta get back to work now.
All the best,

hi Matt, Thanks for all
hi Matt, Thanks for all your hard work on Indiebound! I love it and wish I had a few more hours in the day to pursue other local merchants. I do hope to start an independent business alliance here - hopefully in Yakima with a monthly online newsletter. I hope to spend a week or so in September delivering window decals to other local indie businesses and urge them to sign up. The text below was supposed to be included in Inklings profile, but it won't "stick" - any suggestions?
Inklings Bookshop is a proudly independent, 3,000 sq. foot bookshop in Yakima, WA. With a coffeeshop as a neighbor and a square of green lawn, we love being the "third place" for our community.
Thanks!
First of all, thanks for your feedback, and thanks for taking the time you do have to help us out with the community!
I was able to add that text to your store's profile without any problems. I checked the logs and didn't see anything--normally when a user updates a page I get a log entry--so if you tried to submit it earlier I don't think it went through at all. Not sure what happened there, but please let me know if you continue to have problems.
And of course you know we'll always send you more of the decals, right? Just let us know; we have a ton of them!
nice to put a face to a name!
I see u like Russian lit. A friend gave me a book of Gogol short stories, which I never would have picked up on my own, but it's actually very enjoyable.
The Overcoat
Gogol is one of my favorite writers...did you read "The Overcoat" or "The Nose"?

Your blog!
Matt! Thanks for the kind words about my video entry :)
On your profile page, you mention that you've got a blog--with tangentws about Drupal! I was going to ask if you could put a link to it on your profile, but then I found it by searching "Matt." But the blog I found doesn't have any long tangents about Drupal (which I really want to read.) Is there another blog somewhere, or is it in the works?
Thanks
