In a gorgeously retro illustrated reimagining of “The Little Mermaid,” Israeli author Nurit Zarchi and illustrator Rutu Modan bring us the poignant story of a worrywart named Whatwilltheysay, whose life is turned upside down by the spunky mermaid who shows up in his bathtub one day.

Through vibrant, retro-inspired images we meet an ordinary young man named Whatwilltheysay, who returns home to find Grain of Sand, a mermaid, waiting for him. Although he finds her beautiful and charming, Whatwilltheysay can’t possibly fall in love with a fish—what would people say? Broken-hearted, Grain of Sand leaves Whatwilltheysay to return to his normal life. But soon he realizes his mistake and goes to sea in search of the love he’s nearly lost.

An entrancing illustrated story for readers ages five to ten, The Mermaid in the Bathtub finally brings into English a treasure of modern Israeli children’s literature.
