Buy Indie Day

May 1st has been declared Buy Indie Day. The idea: buy one book—paperback, hardcover, audiobook, whatever you want!—at an independent bookstore near you.
I think writer Kevin Guilfoile said it well when he posted:
"There's an opportunity here to make something very cool happen—near simultaneous, informal meet-ups of readers and writers in independent bookstores all over the country—and it can happen with practically no effort at all."
You can RSVP, invite friends and discuss with other indie shoppers on Buy Indie Day's Facebook page, and find an indie bookstore near you on the Indie Store Finder map.

Philly Liars Club Tells the Truth About Independent Bookstores
Big weekend coming up here in Philly.
Dennis Tafoya's debut novel DOPE THIEF hits stores on Buy Indie Day and to celebrate, Dennis will be signing at the Doylestown Book Store, Doylestown, PA from 6:00 to 8:00.
Then on Saturday the Philly Liar's Club kicks off the "Truth About Independent Bookstores" tour with a party at the Doylestown Book Store from 2:00 to 4:00.

Celebrating Buy Indie Day Early
I'll be traveling tomorrow, so I'm headed to River's End Books in Oswego, NY to buy a bunch of books today!
I am buying...
at the University of Tennessee Bookstore tomorrow! The declaration of "Buy Indie Day" is a great reason for me to buy some great books! :) My wallet won't be happy but that is why we have a love/hate relationship.
Early and Late
I'm celebrating a day early and a day late! I just ordered some books from Devaney, Doak & Garret (http://www.ddgbooks.com/), a wonderful indie bookstore in Farmington ME. On Saturday I'll be visiting another excellent local favorite, the Maine Coast Book Shop (http://www.mainecoastbookshop.com/) in Damariscotta.
Driving 70 miles
I will be driving about 70 miles to do this. I don't know what I'm going to be purchasing yet but I'll be buying it at The Bookends Bookstore in Menomine, Wisconsin.

May 1st - Buy Indie Day
I too will have to purchase my book electronically since my independent bookstore of choice (Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego, CA) is a full 90 miles away.
But buy I will!!
Buying Indie in Singapore
I was a day early, but I picked up Italo Calvino's Six Memos for the Next Millennium and a trio of rare Moleskine notebooks at the fantastic BooksActually in Singapore. I love this literary bookshop to pieces.

I can think of NO place better suited to show your support than at Reiter's Books!
Reiter's is DC’s oldest, local, independent, family-owned & operated bookstore at 1990 K St. NW, DC.
The store is right downtown, in the Georgetown/Foggy Bottom neighborhood within blocks of TWO nearby metro stations - so you do NOT even need to drive downtown and look for parking, which is great!

Buy Indie Day from NorCAL
Adrienne purchased 3 used books, including Allen Ginsberg's Reality Sandwich, and a DVD of the classic film Laura today at the preview opening of the Friends Bookstore, which supports the San Rafael Public Library (built 100 years ago by Andrew Carnegie). And then, she came home, read this article about Buy Indie Day, and realized she had celebrated the holiday unintentionally (but she would have done it on purpose if she had known about it earlier in the day, of course)!
Alas, for me
Buy Indie Day turned into Buy Nothing Day.

I am new to SD and do not know any local indie bookstores in the area. I am near SDSU, any suggestions?? Also, I love how there are a lot of local farmer's markets to shop at down here.
