Through the years, Vroman's has continued to be an independently owned family business, expanding several times, opening a stationery supply store and a second bookstore location in the Hastings Ranch area of Pasadena. For many years, it was the largest bookstore west of the Mississippi, and it continues to be the largest independent bookstore in Southern California. Vroman’s was the first bookstore in the country to have a computerized inventory, and one of the first to implement streamlining efforts like license plate receiving (a computerized receiving method that improves efficiency).

LOVE this bookstore
My parents started taking me to Vroman's when I was a small child. I remember a time when you could buy art supplies like Grumbacher paints and canvases at Vroman's and I have never fallen out of love with books or with Vroman's. They almost always have what I need and there's nothing better than to spend a hour browsing the shelves and finding something wonderful to read. I never walk out of there empty-handed and I hope and pray that Pasadena will always have Vroman's.
Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena, CA
Actually, I already wrote a review of Vroman's Bookstore on my weblog HERE.
If you don't want to jump to that site, then let it suffice to say here that Vroman's is just what you want in an independent bookstore: comfortable, well-stocked, fun to browse in, equipped with a coffee bar!
This store has one fine
This store has one fine independent movie program, great author meet-and-greet programs, and of course, readings. One distinctive activity this particular bookstore did was to publish, in large poster format, the statement the owner wrote declaring that they refused to hand over their customer list when Homeland Security came knocking, asking for a list of what customers read certain books for "investigative" purposes shortly after September 11, 2001 and the passage of the Patriot Act. The were involved in a lawsuit about this issue and, with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), WON! The case was pretty high-profile in the area and gave me faith and hope that the small businesses and liberty can prevail!
