Independents Week
Posted by paige on Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 6:07pm

It's right around the corner—Independents Week! Time to celebrate all the great locally-owned independent businesses in your city.
A few goings-on we've heard about so far:
Octavia Books in New Orleans, Louisiana, along with NOLA independent business alliance Stay Local, are celebrating all week. They're kicking things off with a showing of Independent America: Rising from the Ruins, a documentary about how vital independents have been in rebuilding New Orleans. Check StayLocal.org for more on the week's events.
Next Page Bookstore and the Summit Independent Business Alliance in Frisco, Colorado are planning a countywide celebration with over 100 indie businesses.
Quail Ridge Books of Raleigh, North Carolina, along with Shop Local Raleigh are planning huge events for Independents Week, and spreading the word online. Check out Shop Local Raleigh on Facebook and Twitter.

Shopping and Donating Locally
Every month I do my best to make a donation to three charities. July's donations will all go to local charities as they could use the support as well as the businesses. I'm still suggesting to my city leaders that they need to do more. Sooner or later they will get tired of hearing from me and develop an india project like they have in a neighboring city.
Trading Coffee for Bookshelf Independence
On July 4th, The Easy Chair Coffee Shop will convert our reading room to a small, high-quality used book section. All “new” inventory will be reduced to used book prices. Liberate your bookshelves of any hardcover, trade paperback or mass market paperback books that are falling off the end of the shelf. Maybe you have old book club books or you just want to make room for great new titles that are certain to come out this year. Box them up and bring them to the Easy Chair from July 1 to July 5 and get a free coffee or espresso beverage of your choice.
